EDC Scope of Works
EDC have been appointed as Lead MEP designers for public realm services including Lighting, Security, and Utilities, as well as MEP consultants on the office quarter and residential quarter. These elements account for approx. 75% of the overall development.
The MEP design completed by EDC takes into account the challenges of modern-day building, where a balance has to be achieved between thermal performance and airtightness, and comfort levels within the space. To ensure that the building does not overheat, particularly in areas where there are higher levels of glazing and internal gains, adequate means of limiting summertime temperatures will be implemented. External shading in the form of window reveals and overhangs, and solar performance glazing will be considered in the façade design to assist in the reduction of overheating. A software simulation will be carried out to determine the reductions required and will assist in establishing the most appropriate measures for reducing solar gains.
The office building is designed to ensure a LEED Gold certificate will be granted to the development in line with current office accommodation expectations in the city. Detailed modelling and dynamic simulations will be carried out during the development in order to inform, optimise, and validate the proposed designs. Simulations will be used to perform a detailed analysis of the areas listed below, in order to determine the suitability and effectiveness of various systems:
- Natural ventilation and overheating risk
- Natural daylight distribution
- Regulatory Compliance Assessments for Part L
- Energy performance Assessments for LEED
- Building energy use
- MEP Plant and Equipment Selections
The scheme design for the residential quarter of the development shall include space heating to each apartment from a central LPHW system which will comprise heating centre with a high-efficiency gas boiler, district heating network, heat interface units, and panel radiators. To meet compliance with the renewable energy requirements set out in Part L, the heating centre will be supplemented with a micro-CHP system.
EDC carried out all pre-planning site utilities design and coordination, which will form part of a major electrical infrastructure upgrade for the area north of the River Lee. A public realm lighting plan and external plant spaces development were also in the pre-planning remit.
